Wilbur Thirkield, 8th Howard University President
Wilbur Patterson Thirkield served as Howard University’s eighth president from September 1, 1906 until June 20 1912. President Thirkield persuaded the federal government to build the first building on campus for the “promotion of the sciences “pure and applied.” The physics building is named for him. Mr. Thirkield also persuaded philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to provide funding for the construction of the Carnegie Building.
